Core Eligibility, Payment, & Financial Metric Calculation Service | Truenorth - Unison

This project involved building a mission-critical service that governs Unison's ability to offer shared equity financing. The core function is a robust engine that performs two vital tasks: automated financial underwriting (eligibility) and real-time calculation of funding terms.

My responsibility was to translate complex financial formulas and regulatory parameters into reliable, high-performance backend logic. This service acts as the central engine, consuming applicant and property data to provide a rapid, definitive judgment on eligibility and crucial financial metrics, ensuring speed and consistency in the application pipeline.

Impact on Business and Financial Risk:

The implementation of this service delivered significant value by mitigating risk and enhancing operational speed across the financing pipeline:

  1. Risk Mitigation & Accuracy: Centralizing the calculation of payments and APR ensures the consistent and accurate application of complex underwriting rules. This drastically reduces financial risk and human error associated with manual calculations or discrepancies across systems.

  2. Operational Speed & Conversion: The high-availability service provides instantaneous financial calculations and eligibility feedback to all consumption points. This speed accelerates the entire application funnel, directly improving the customer conversion rate.

  3. Transparency: Provides downstream systems (web portals, agent tools) with accurate, real-time figures for payments and APR, which is crucial for regulatory compliance and enhancing customer trust in the financing terms.

Key Responsibilities & Achievements:

  • Financial Calculation Engine: Designed and implemented the core service responsible for executing complex, parameter-driven financial calculations to determine funding suitability, required payments, and key metrics like Annual Percentage Rate (APR).

  • Eligibility Logic: Developed the logic to assess client and property suitability based on specific financial and regulatory parameters.

  • Parameter Management: Developed a flexible structure to manage and apply specific rules based on the product type, ensuring the service remains adaptable to new financial offerings.

  • High-Availability Design: Engineered the service for low latency and high availability to support real-time decision-making and calculation crucial for application processing.

  • Testing & Validation: Developed rigorous unit and integration tests to ensure the calculation and decision logic accurately reflects all internal financial formulas and regulatory requirements.
